Baldwyn “digging deep” with Main Street Improvements

The Main Street Streetscape construction is nearing completion with the last phases of work to be done over the next three weeks.

Jim Epps, project manager for the federally funded grant project, told the Baldwyn Rotary Club on Thursday that Prairie Construction and other
contractors should finish in February. The contractors have requested a 22 day extension due to the extreme weather conditions in January. If granted the extension construction would be complete by mid February.

Construction work has been underway since early October and contractors have made every effort to provide safe and accessible entrances to
businesses with minimum inconvenience. Main Street Director, Lori Tucker, stated, "Communication has been the key during this process. These contractors have been outstanding and have gone the extra mile to assist our business owners and residents."

Jim Epps, Senior Engineer at Cook-Coggin Engineers, said overall improvements will include replacement of existing sidewalks, new
handicapped accessible sidewalks, pedestrian crosswalks at intersections, tree planting, irrigation, new street lamps, underground
electrical and water lines and new striping.

“This has been an ambitious project for the city of Baldwyn, having begun about three years ago,” Epps added.

The previous mayor and board of aldermen had communicated with officials in Corinth about the pre-construction decisions because they recently
completed a new streetscape.

Epps presented a slide show of photos comparing the streetscape before work began and now. He explained some of the details in construction of
the sidewalks, stamped pedestrian crosswalks, handicapped access and lighting installation.

He added that contractors were able to maintain the number of parking spots and create improved handicapped parking.

Mayor Michael James has worked closely with Epps and several contractors who have all done a great job, so far.

One business owner present at the meeting commended the contractors for their efforts to make access to the businesses as comfortable as
possible during construction.

“We have tried to keep the public informed, address their concerns, and help make this streetscape a very inviting and pleasant project for everyone,” Mayor James said.
